Questions & Answers

Q- Are over the counter head lice removal products and sprays completely safe?

A- No. Most are toxic pesticides.  Unlike many lice treatments, our process relies on a non-toxic solution and a proven combing method. Over the counter products are ineffective at eliminating lice, they do not kill all the lice and are ineffective on the eggs, only a thorough combing will eliminate nits and lice.

Q- How long do lice live off a host?
A- Lice can live up to 24 hours off a human host.

Q- Does hairspray and gel deter lice from going to the head?

A- No.  It is a myth that these products prevent anyone from getting lice.  Head lice will go on any human with blood.

Q- If my child gets head lice, does it mean we have poor hygiene?
A- Absolutely not. Lice will transfer to any head but they actually prefer clean and healthy hair, it is easier for them to attach their eggs and move around.

Q- Can head lice jump or fly?
A- Lice do not jump or fly, they spread by head to head contact or can be picked up in the environment should one have fallen off an infested head in an area your head contacts.

Q- Can lice lay their eggs on my furniture?

A- No.  Lice can only lay their eggs on the hair shaft.  They need the heat of the scalp to hatch.

Q-  Once you have head lice are you less likely to catch it again?
A- The contrary, lice leave a scent on the head that actually "attracts" other lice. This scent is a guarantee that you are a good food source.
Additionally, you often return to the same group of friends, at school or sleepovers, where lice most likely already exist. Some parents may find they must repeat lice treatments again a short time later because there is still an infestation that has not been treated in the circle of friends.
Successful, permanent head lice removal means diligent, proactive efforts.

Q- Can you drown and wash away lice if you take a shower?
Lice can hold their breath for up to 2 hours and lock their claws into the hair shaft allowing them to hang on for dear life.

Why has this become such a problem?

Head lice are insects and like other insects, repeated exposure to chemicals over an extended period of time has allowed the lice to build up a resistance to the very product once used to kill them.  If nits are left on the head to hatch, the cycle will start all over again.  Equally is important is the need to recognize and remove the nymphs or juvenile lice, often as tiny as the tip of a very sharp pencil.  Nymphs grow to start families of their own.

Another important factor is the failure to follow through with precautionary measures.  While it is not necessary, you must still exercise common sense cleaning of your basics.

Remember, Lice DO NOT live in your home, but need blood to survive.
